Design and Technology
At Birches Green Primary School we believe that Design and Technology is a powerful subject that nurtures curiosity, creativity, and resilience. Aligned with our school motto—'Curious Together, Learning Together, Achieving Together'—our curriculum inspires pupils to explore, experiment, and design solutions to real-world problems while fostering a love of learning.
We recognise that Design and Technology fosters a broad set of skills and are committed to making it accessible to all learners. Our curriculum is designed to instil confidence, promote a ‘can do’ attitude, and contribute to a positive and inclusive learning environment where every child feels valued and empowered.
Our Design and Technology lessons give children the opportunity to; investigate existing products, create designs, practise new skills, make a product and evaluate what they have made. Children work with a variety of materials and components, including construction materials, textiles, and ingredients, selecting them based on their properties and suitability for different projects.
Our scheme of work ensures that pupils develop a range of Design and Technology skills throughout KS1 and KS2, covering areas such as mechanisms, structures, textiles, and food and nutrition. Pupils build and apply their knowledge to design and produce prototypes and products for a variety of users, making informed choices about tools, materials, and techniques. They develop essential cooking skills and a strong understanding of nutrition, fostering healthy habits for life.
Design and Technology at Birches Green Primary School provides children with valuable opportunities to develop their creativity, problem-solving abilities, and technical knowledge through hands-on experiences. By being curious together, they develop confidence in exploring new ideas; by learning together, they refine their skills through teamwork and perseverance; and by achieving together, they celebrate success through innovation and excellence. We believe it is essential to nurture these qualities to prepare pupils for the designed and manufactured world around them, inspiring them to become the creative thinkers and problem solvers of the future.
